Seven strikes three-year partnership with Athletics Australia

The Seven Network’s coverage of Australian athletics is ready to step up another gear, as Athletics Australia and Seven announce a three-year streaming deal, commencing with the Australian Track and Field Championships this month, live, free and in HD* on 7plus.

Athletics is one of Australia’s most loved sports, with Australian track and field athletes featuring in six of the top 10 events on Seven during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games last year.

Australians will not miss any of the action at a national level, with Seven broadcasting the next three editions of the Australian Track and Field Championships.

Footy’s best team lines up for a huge 2022

Fan favourites bolster AFL coverage on Seven, Your Home of Footy

Football’s #1 commentary team is locked and loaded, ready to bring fans an epic 2022 AFL season in what looks to be an incredibly tight race to September. With some fresh and familiar faces delivering all the action live and free, there’s no other place footy fans will want to be than the Seven Network, Your Home of Footy.

In a massive bonus for fans, four-time premiership hero and Hawthorn and Port Adelaide legend Shaun Burgoyne will join the Seven team in his first-ever commentary role.

Fresh off the back of his 407-game AFL career, the man affectionately known as “Silk” will join Seven’s coverage of the Round One Grand Final re-match between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs at the MCG. Across the season, Burgoyne will be part of the commentary team for Adelaide-based matches and marquee games.

After making guest appearances during the 2021 season, Brisbane Lions premiership star Chris Johnson will also join the Seven team in 2022 to provide expert commentary and analysis on the game he played at the elite level for 13 years.

In addition to the team’s new recruits, Seven welcomes back football’s star-studded line-up in 2022, including the game’s best group of callers – Brian Taylor, James Brayshaw, Hamish McLachlan, Jason Bennett and Luke Darcy.

Expert commentators Daisy Pearce, Luke Hodge, Wayne Carey, Matthew Richardson, Jobe Watson, Erin Phillips, Leigh Matthews, Tim Watson, Cameron Ling, Jimmy Bartel and Abbey Holmes are also back, while Abbey Gelmi, Jacqui Felgate, Jude Bolton, Mark Soderstrom, Nigel Carmody and Campbell Brown round out football’s best team.

For Australia’s favourite footy expert, Daisy Pearce, there’s no shortage of possibility on the eve of the 2022 AFL season.

Melbourne’s drought-breaking Premiership was 57 years in the making. Can they continue to improve as ‘The Hunted’ and do what only three teams have been able to do in the past two-and-a-bit decades and go back-to-back?

Who is Hawthorn in this new Sam Mitchell dawn? His coaching journey – taking the reins from one of the greatest coaches of all time – will be fascinating to watch. Autumn Racing takes centre stage

Group 1 stars set to shine on Seven and 7plus

Some of Australian racing’s most coveted prizes go on the line over the coming weeks as the Autumn Racing Carnival heats up on the Seven Network, including the $5 million All-Star Mile at Flemington and the 66th running of the $5 million Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill Gardens.

The Autumn Racing Carnival kicks up a gear tomorrow with a huge day of thoroughbred racing from Randwick Guineas Day and Australian Guineas Day at Flemington, including three Group 1 races live and free from 12pm AEDT on Seven and 7plus.

Over the next 11 Saturdays, fans will enjoy the very best racing from the Sydney and Melbourne Autumn Carnivals live and free on Seven and 7plus, with the highlights including:  

  • Flemington Super Saturday on 12 March, featuring the coveted Group 1 $1.5 million Australian Cup (2000m) and Newmarket Handicap (1200m) 
  • The 66th running of the $5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m), the world’s richest race for two-year-olds and one of five Group 1 races at Rosehill Gardens on 19 March
  • The $5 million All-Star Mile, the world’s richest 1600m race, at Flemington on 19 March
  • The Championships, which features eight Group 1 races across two action-packed Saturdays at Randwick on 2 and 9 April

Autumn racing has provided so many incredible highlights in recent years – who can forget Winx’s spectacular 2019 retirement? This year all eyes will be on Verry Elleegant. If everything goes right for her, expectations are she’ll run in Europe at the prestigious Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

The Championships have provided the spice to the autumn that we’ve historically experienced in spring racing here in Australia. The $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes will decide our horse of the year, and there are a number of key contenders seeking the crown.

For the first time on the same day, we have the world’s richest two-year-old race, and the Golden Slipper and All-Star Mile are both now worth $5 million. It’s going to be spine tingling.

Tokyo Olympics coverage collects two SportAus gongs

The Seven Network’s ground-breaking coverage of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 has shone bright among a field of Australian broadcasters, recognised with the 2021 Sport Australia Media Award for Best Coverage of a Sporting Event at the annual gala event in Sydney last night.

Esteemed sport broadcaster David Culbert was recognised with the Sport Australia Media Award for Best Sport Coverage by an Individual – Video for his informed, impassioned and entertaining commentary across Seven’s coverage of Games, including his most memorable call of Jess Fox’s canoe gold alongside Jess’ father, Richard.

The honours follow three awards from the International Olympic Committee’s coveted Golden Rings Awards in Lausanne in November last year.

Seven’s Tokyo 2020 broadcast reached more Australians than ever before, with 21 million people tuning in to watch the 17 days of competition on an unprecedented 45 channels across Seven and 7plus, making it the biggest television and streaming event in Australian history.

The network also proudly delivered the biggest and best Paralympic coverage ever for Tokyo 2020 across 13 unmissable days, shattering all previous Australian television audience records with coverage of the Opening Ceremony reaching 1.94 million people and each day of competition reaching between 2.5 million and 3 million viewers.

Seven produced a history-making broadcast and digital coverage of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo that united and gripped Australians in their millions, arguably at a time when the country needed it most.

Supercars rev up on Seven

Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight this weekend on Seven and 7plus

Sports fans are strapping themselves in for a thrilling 2022 Supercars season, as the Repco Supercars Championship kicks off with this weekend’s Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight, live and free on Seven, 7mate and 7plus.

With five hours of live coverage each day, leading sports broadcaster Mark Beretta and former Supercars driver Jack Perkins will take viewers live to Sydney Motorsport Park for all the action from 4.30pm AEDT this Saturday, 5 March, on 7mate, before a 12.00pm AEDT start time on Sunday, 6 March, on Channel 7.

Throughout the 2022 Supercars season, fans can immerse themselves in all the high-octane action, with every race available live, free and in HD* on 7plus. Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games start in one week

Following an adrenaline-charged Olympic Winter Games, our Aussie athletes will hit the slopes once again when the Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 start live, free and in HD* on Seven and 7plus from Friday, 4 March.

Beginning with the official Paralympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony from 11.00pm AEDT, Johanna Griggs will host Seven’s Paralympic Winter coverage, while 7NEWS’ Matt Carmichael will take Australians into the heart of all the action live from Beijing. Four-time Paralympian Jessica Gallagher will also join Seven’s coverage of the Games.

In the lead-up to the Games, Seven will kick-start the Paralympic spirit from Saturday, 26 February, with the Winter Paralympics Preview Show and the premiere of All the Way Up – a documentary about Australian Paralympian Sam Tait embarking on a journey to become the first paraplegic to summit and ski down the highest mountain in Australia, Mt Kosciuszko.

Beijing 2022 delivers gold for Seven

12.5 million Australians watch Winter Olympics, 7plus streaming surges 254%

The Seven Network’s exclusive, live and free coverage of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 has powered Seven to its biggest start to a television ratings survey year since 2018.

Beijing 2022 delivered record-breaking digital audiences on 7plus and reached a national audience of 12.5 million viewers for its linear broadcast on Channel 7, 7mate and 7two.

The Evening and Late sessions both dominated their timeslots, ranking #1 in total people, 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s. The Evening session averaged a total audience of 725,000 viewers nationally on broadcast and 7plus.

Viewing on 7plus was particularly popular with younger viewers, with VOZ data recording an incremental audience reach on broadcast in 18 to 39s of 15.4%.

Total streaming for Beijing 2022 surpassed PyeongChang 2018 after only four days of competition and drove a surge in 7plus registrations, lifting the total number of registered accounts to more than 11.5 million.

Viewing on 7plus was particularly popular with younger viewers, with VOZ data recording an incremental audience reach on broadcast in 18 to 39s of 15.4%.

The strong audience numbers helped secure Seven a dominant network win across the first two weeks of the 2022 OzTAM survey ratings year.

Seven won 13 days out of the first two weeks in 2022 to record a 43.8% commercial broadcast share in total people, up 8.5 share points on 2021, a 43.0% share in 16 to 39s (up 13.7 points) and a 41.5% share in 25 to 54s (up 10.0 points).

Seven’s broadcast of Beijing 2022 has captivated the nation, with 12.5 million viewers cheering on Australia’s best-ever Winter Olympics performance. The high-octane action helped Seven secure its biggest ratings survey year start since 2018, sweeping every market and every demo.

The audience growth on 7plus was phenomenal and marked the largest digital consumption ever for a Winter Olympics, with live streaming up 254% on PyeongChang.

Super Bowl soars on Seven and 7plus

Live streaming up 45% on 2021
Biggest TV audience since 2016

The Seven Network’s live and free coverage of Super Bowl LVI was a hit with fans, reaching 1.87 million people nationally on Monday and recording its biggest television audience since 2016.

7plus’ live stream of America’s biggest sporting event smashed the previous audience record set in 2021, up 45% year-on-year with 11.04 million minutes streamed.

Seven’s full coverage of the Los Angeles Rams’ 23-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals recorded an average total audience of 583,000 nationally, including 49,000 viewers on 7plus.

The total audience is up 33% on the 2021 Super Bowl and is the second biggest Australian Super Bowl audience ever.

Broadcast viewing peaked at 977,000 on Channel 7 during the halftime show, headlined by Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and 50 Cent. The Super Bowl streamed more live minutes than any other program yesterday with 7plus recording a 58% commercial share in live streaming on Monday.

The Seven Network’s exclusive, live and free coverage of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 has helped Seven secure its biggest start to a television ratings survey year since 2018.

After reclaiming the title of Australia’s most-watched network in 2021, Seven has maintained its strong ratings momentum, with Beijing 2022 delivering record-breaking broadcast shares and digital streaming growth on 7plus.

So far in the first week of the OzTAM 2022 survey ratings year, the Seven Network has won every single day to record a 43% commercial broadcast share in total people, up 7.6 share points on 2021, a 42.6% share in 16 to 39s (up 12.2 points) and a 40.5% share in 25 to 54s (up 9.5 points).

Seven’s coverage of Beijing 2022 has so far reached 10.2 million viewers with the Evening and Late sessions both dominating their timeslot across days 1-6, ranking #1 in total people, 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s.

On 7plus, Seven’s comprehensive coverage on up to 20 channels has so far streamed 195 million minutes, up 306% on 2018 PyeongChang during the same period. New registered users have also surged on 7plus, up 100,000 since the start of Beijing 2022, bringing its total number of registered accounts to more than 11.5 million.

7plus is particularly popular with younger viewers, with VOZ data recording an incremental audience reach on broadcast in 18 to 39s of 16%.

The Winter Olympics is the largest and most addressable brand-safe marketing platform for brands right now looking to target younger audiences. It has helped Seven secure its biggest ratings survey year start since 2018 in 25 to 54s, 16 to 39s and total people.

Not only has the Winter Olympics delivered enormous reach to start the year, it marks the largest digital consumption ever for a Winter Olympics, with live streaming up 254% on PyeongChang 2018.
