Yianni Vivliotis tells us about his career in the industry leading up to where he is now, a Senior Sports Sales Executive in Sydney, and also shares his experience at Cannes in Cairns earlier this year.
Q1. Tell us about your career in the media industry so far?
I am coming up to seven years at Seven West Media in the Sales department. I started at Pacific Magazines working across Better Home & Gardens and Home Beautiful. I then moved to the Sport Sales Team at Seven, where I have been for the past three years. This allowed me to delve into my passion for sport and be able to apply this to my day-to-day work life. Over the years, it’s been great to see how media consumption, specifically for sport, has changed significantly. This was highlighted especially during Tokyo 2020 where viewers were in the driver’s seat to watch what they wanted, when they wanted and how they wanted across Channel 7 and 7plus.
Q2. You recently went to Cannes in Cairns. How was that? What was your key takeaway from the event?
Aside from Cairns being a great destination for a holiday, the conference was everything I could have hoped for and more! It was great to hear industry leaders talk through the ever-changing landscape of media in Australia, and how the advancement of new formats has impacted traditional mediums. In a reactive market, the conference highlighted the need for brand vs performance, but also the importance of both working together.
The standouts for me were Ash Barty and her “be interested, not interesting” approach. Also, Mark Bouris who spoke about technology as a disruptor, and how this disruption is empowering the rise of entrepreneurs. Gilligans in Cairns was also a great spot for a quiet beverage!
Q3. What does a typical day look like in your role?
A very cliché answer, but it does change every day, especially with sport being seasonal!
It starts by checking the LiveScore app or watching sport highlights and interviews from the night before. Together, with of course some bias office commentary!
Being in the middle of the AFL season (what a season it has been!), campaign reporting for AFL partners is high on the to-do list – both from an audience and integration perspective.
Presenting and liaising with clients on our 7Sport offering, together with responding to briefs is definitely at the core. Especially with the Commonwealth Games, Supercars and Summer of Cricket all coming up.
Q4. If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Entrée – Fresh seafood platter – prawns, scallops, calamari, mussels, oysters etc
Main – Slow cooked lamb roast, with a side of pastichio (Greek lasagne)
Dessert – My Mum’s tiramisu
Location – Kythera (Greek Island)
Drink – A Maccas Coke
